On March 27th 1973 at the Motion pictures Academy Awards, 'The Godfather' won Three awards:
Best film, Best Actor (Marlon Brando) and Best Screenplay.
Brando would not attend and instead sent Sacheen Littlefeather a Native American actress to explain why he had refused his Oscar.
Brando was protesting about the treatment of the Native Americans by the Film Industry and also drawing attention an escalating incident at Wounded Knee in South Dakota (the site of the 1890 Sioux massacre) where the native American Indians were fighting for their civil rights.
His (Marlon Brando) action and Sacheen's speach brought mass media attention to their plight and furthered their cause.
