talks to Fran Suzi
on release of 'saltwater song'
Hello nicha - I love this - best pauliepaul x
In a wash of haunting harmonies, delicious melodies and touches of Asian influence, saltwater song will submerge your ears into a dream-state. nicha’s new track ebbs and flows like a sonic rollercoaster painting the picture of someone who desires more from their life than what is in store currently. This budding young artist has worked with producer Michael Mormecha to conjure up another fresh, new track. With subtle hints of electronica, elements of folk and a strong essence of soft-rock, saltwater song shows off nicha’s ability to blend genres once again, rolling off the back of her last critically acclaimed track; little bird. nicha has exposed herself with vulnerability and attitude in saltwater song through captivating lyrics, superb music and a unique, unforgettable voice.
Musical background?
I always wanted to play Sweet Home Alabama on guitar so that led me to learning the guitar and singing. I played my first gig in my hometown Holywood when I was 15 with my guitar teacher and his friend - it scared the life out of me but I wanted to keep doing it. I really loved the feeling of the nerves and then the relief once you start playing and really enjoying it.
I spent most of my lunch times ditching my friends at school to go to the music rooms where I'd write and record music. I started playing covers gigs and couldn't really believe it was a job! I always felt very lucky to be able to do something I love so much and earn money at the same time. At the moment I'm learning more music things in Leeds, studying music performance and production at Leeds Beckett University.
Influences?
Bob Dylan, Jack Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Eminem and so many more. I grew up on Hendrix and Dylan so they've definitely shaped how I play and write music. Recently I've been getting inspired by Khruangbin, Bobby Orzora and Still Woozy. I've been loving the instrumental and production side of things = Pensados place podcast is great and videos by Jacob Collier on YouTube for production tips. As well as these legends I listen to a lot of electronic music by Moloko, Brame and Hamo, Motor City Drum Ensemble and Jamie xx.
What inspires lyrics?
I usually write about the experiences I've had and lessons I've learnt or a lot of the time I will write a song as a form of catharsis. It's like free therapy! I just get my thoughts and feelings out onto a page and often I'll feel better after it. I try to let myself be vulnerable when it comes to writing music because I want to relate to people who have been through something similar.
