Soft Cell
'Say Hello Wave Goodbye'
Extended single ❤️
Feat Dave Tofani
First published in 2017/8 before my in depth interview with Dave Tofani who performed the beautiful clarinet solo on this single. Interestingly the B side of the 7" was an instrumental which was unheard of at the time really. Oh (just like the scene queuing at the cinema in Annie hall) for proof I just happen to have a single here...
I mentioned my interview with Dave Tofani which took me 4 years to achieve. When finally I got to speak to Dave the years patiently spent waiting reminding were worth everything and much more. Please read our conversation he gives a gorgeous account of that time spent with Almond,Ball and Thorne. As Dave talked about that clarinet piece, I felt like some Indiana Jones type finally finding my treasure! The interview with Dave was gorgeous and we've also become good friends. I'll put a message below he sent for my birthday after I asked him if he'd play a piece of 'Say Hello..' into the New York air for me ... best pp

In the early 80's 12" singles were £1.99. I loved them. Some were just another chorus with a few more repetitive synth sounds, and others..... Were genius. The extended version of Say Hello Wave Goodbye by Soft Cell is the latter.
All Soft Cell 12" singles were wonderful creative extensions of the song. (Try and find the vinyl 12" box set)
I love the Artwork on Say Hello... I remember holding the cover and thinking how much it summed Soft Cell up. From memory it was a Huw Feather design infact he designed nearly all of the Soft Cell record covers. My copy is North at my Mum's house.

The 12" Say Hello Wave Goodbye is a glorious 9.08 min long and prepare for a journey.... and you know that feeling you get when you play something you love - to someone who hasn't heard it... well stick around for this one!
Dave Tafani takes centre stage at the beginning and weaves an emotion touching clarinet solo up and down and around the song.
At one point you think Mr Almond is about to interrupt... but the clarinet takes you up and down and around again.
Finally Mr Ball is able to bring in the recognisable music and another perfect half begins.
For me it's one of Soft Cell's best songs and Marc Almond's vocal his best ever... but this record has a place in my growing up and I'm very bias - ♥️
stop press/ Was privileged to see Marc perform Say Hello with the McCarricks at The Wallace Collection recently and his voice is still perfect.

The orchestration on the extended Say Hello Wave Goodbye and indeed most of the Soft Cell 12 inch singles is not surprising when you consider that the producer Mike Thorne, was a classically trained musician! Oh if all music producers had such a qualification...
