BILLY BRAGG : ROOTS, RADICALS AND ROCKERS
How Skiffle Changed The World.
"Skiffle" emerged from the Soho jazz clubs of the 50's.
It was soon adopted by the post war kids who had faced the post war rationing. They were looking for their own style, away from the smooth crooners that the BBC championed. Lonnie Donegan was the hero. I remember my Dad ... a perfect example of that generation, (born 1936) sing...."Does Your Chewing Loose It's Flavour...." in the kitchen whilst cooking a Sunday roast. |

Lonnie Donegan's version of 'Rock Island Line' charted in 1956. It inspired a generation and guitar sales allegedly went from 5000 to 250,000 in a year. Wash board sales figures not available.....

Looking forward to this book. It's a subject close to my heart as my partner's Father Ken Sims (who recently died) played with Lonnie.

LETTING GO by ALEX HANSCOMBE.
In 1992 Alex was walking with his mother on Wimbledon Common, when he witnessed her being brutaly murdered.
The murder of Rachel Nickells shocked the nation. I remember vividly - feeling for this small boy at the time.
How do you get over that? Alex records his emotional journey in his new book.
Some books should not have to be written. This is one.

Has everyone got a favorite album cover?
Well If like me you think that it is an art in it's own right. (You might recognise some above...) You need to buy this book. Not available yet but - In his day bands would queue (or wait next door in the pub) to talk album art - work with Brian Griffin. The book contains pictures that were not used... and for me Is an important historical record..... Just don't mention Talk Talk... who he might have thrown out for being ....... |
