The Novel of The Century - David Bellos
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo is ofter referred to as the greatest novel ever written. The book has inspired countless films, musicals and plays and remains a masterpiece.
Book of the week on radio 4 is entitled "Novel of The Century" and tell's the complete story of the Novel and it's author.
If your a fan or not, you need to listen to this book on R4 then buy it .... Tim S
The novel ran into a few problems, Hugo was still under contract for another novel with the publisher of his previous work. 4000 Francs was the agreed sum. Far less than Les Miserables was worth. They would have to be bought out...
Also censorship, Napoleon had imposed strict conditions on publishers. To get around this though Hugo looked to Belgium which was a self governing state. Here he found a publisher named "Lacroix" who agreed to publish. |

The fee? Wait for it.. we know that the gold 20franc coins paid - weighed 97kilo's. That much gold is worth £3 million today. And for only an 8 year copyright deal that remains to this day the most expensive book deal ever..... I've put Susan below to cheer us up a bit ....😘
