Southwold
When I get to Southwold
I'll smile on the beach for the precious moment
I walk to the shore to splash my face.
I'll probably paddle & stare at the blue distance
where the sea gives way to the sky &
wish I had a blue weathered beach hut
where I would put the kettle on to make a brew.
The smell of gas & spent match
reminding me of dad making tea for mum
on every holiday we ever had.
When I hear the whistle I will mash my tea
then sit on the wooden steps to drink
gazing deeply into the sea.
Soon I’ll walk around to the harbour &
enjoy putting my jumper on against the evening chill.
Then when after all I've wished done or do.
As my loneliness stands out like a brilliant white lighthouse
against a deep blue seaside sky.
I'll know when I get to Southwold why
I feel alone and miss you.
