Johnny Bourke
'Can't Do Without'
Debut Track
Thanks to Paudie Bourke for the great photographs
I found an email in my 'junk folder' from Johnny and something just told me (Emerald Isle Magic I Suspect) to click and listen. I loved it straight away. Produced by Jackson Dimiglio-Wood (Shawn Mendes) and mastered by multiple Grammy winner Randy Merrill (Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, ... ) The song is an outstanding introduction to an amazing talent. Available from the 3rd July. Watch this space... Get a taste below with 'If You Want To' a live studio track - (Let the Emerald Isle Magic Entrance You...) Best pp
When Johnny spoke to paulie
Hi Johnny can we start with early Influences?
I’m a classically trained pianist and attended a drama school growing up so was always involved in music and theatre. I was exposed to all sorts of music but my biggest influences were artists like John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, and even a bit of Garth Brooks! I developed a love for pop music as I grew older.
What about early Inspiration?
My Dad was a guitarist-vocalist so that’s always been an inspiration for me but the first time I ever performed to a large crowd at around 13 years old I caught the bug and knew that this was something I needed to keep doing.
Can I ask you about home, where you live. Do you feel part of a creative scene?
Ireland has such a crazy wealth of musical talent and it’s increasing year on year. So many amazing artists are coming out of this little island and we are representing in pretty much every genre. It’s very encouraging and I’m proud to play a part in it.
Was music your first love? Did it, does it, have a creative rival - writing for eg...
Without a doubt, there’s nothing else I can imagine doing full-time. Performing is the main aspect with which I am enamoured but I also love writing and producing music. It’s my favourite language!
Fav book/film
The novel of Les Miserables is probably the best book I’ve ever read, it’s a tough read because it was translated from French and some of the middle sections are very historically intense but the story is absolutely amazing. I read the bulk of it on a flight to Australia, it’s VERY long. My favourite film is a tough one to pick, cliché but I think Shawshank keeps knocking everything out of the park.

Do you feel the Change that has happened is happening? in the music Business - ie streaming is a positive or negative to artists like yourself?
Obviously there are some ethical flaws in the structure of royalty payments for streaming but I don’t think anyone can deny the positives of its reach. Streaming has facilitated music being played everywhere and anywhere with the utmost of ease and that was not the case previously when the only forms of music distribution were physical. I think streaming is a relatively new concept and we’re still figuring out the kinks but it’s a wonderful tool and I am grateful to be able to have my music played anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
I think you've answered this but repetition is best for emphasis... Are you at home on stage?
It’s where I am my true-self and it’s the part of me I love the most. It’s hard to put the feelings into words but the buzz I get performing is incomparable.
Are you hands on in production?
Yes definitely, everything I release is at least co-produced by me. I have usually very clear perspective on how I want my songs to sound but sometimes I enjoy bringing in other artists to collaborate and get their outlook on things. It’s absolutely magic what a couple of people who might have differing musical focuses can create together. I enjoy exploring that.
What’s next?
Hopefully “Can’t Do Without” is the song of summer 2020! I’m really excited to see how it’s received. I will be dropping more music before the end of the year so watch this space! You can be sure that as soon as live gigs are back you’ll be able to catch me on the road, I can’t wait to get back on stage.
Thanks Johnny - Best pp x
