Jah Wobble Exhibits his Painting
After spotting Jah Wobbles paintings sometime last year I just liked them straight away. Something about them that certain 'Je ne cest quoi'.
I mentioned an exhibition to Jah at some point later, I'd recently met the lovely Sophie Parkin at her gorgeous private members club & art gallery Vout o Reenee's, It just seemed the perfect place for him to exhibit. Sophie Parkin is a prolific artist herself, the venue always exhibits incredibly interesting work & It all came together over Xmas. A quick introduction and the date was set. It's a great opportunity to see another creative side to one of Britains best loved Musicians. I spoke to him about his paintings and influences. Best pp x

Jah Wobble talks Art with paulie
Hi Jah Wobble I suppose it has to be - what first made you want to paint?
Hi paulie, I rented a unit at the old Rogue Building in Ancoats, Manchester around 2012. Rogue is an artists cooperative. I hired the room
primarily to write words in . Both prose and poetry .I was beginning a book of poetry called ‘Odds and Sods and epilogues’ at that time. Since about 1996 when I did an history of art module as part of a degree that I was doing at Birkbeck college in London. But somehow I felt a bit shy and tentative about beginning to paint . Rogue is (it’s now moved to Gorton), first and foremost a building for visual artists . I was inspired by the smell of the paint on my floor and was encouraged by an abstract artist called Mark Kennard who had a room opposite me to "Get Stuck In." So I did .
What about your favourite art, inspiration?
Turner,Whistler and Blake .
Why the subject matter? Towers etc...

When I was around five years of age my family moved into the Clichy estate . Opposite our flat in Jamaica street there was part of the Stifford Estate . There were three big tower blocks there . Ewehurst, Wickham and Bradmore. My Aunt Mary , Uncle Ted , and my cousins Pat and Marie lived in Bradmore . When my family moved from the old Victorian house we shared with others , I sat up In the sky in Bradmore House with Aunt Mary looking down ,through snow flurries as my Dad pushed a cart with our belongings to our new flat . I ate a Cornish pasty. It was the first time I ate something spicy . I loved it .Mary ,Ted ,Pat and Marie really cared for me . Mary and Ted have passed on . Pat and Marie both live in the Barking area now. Anyway those three big imposing structures really made a big impression on my mind stream.
I had a mental picture then ...
Also 'Draped Seated Woman' by Henry Moore was situated in the middle of the tower blocks.
I like painting geometrical , symmetrical-asymmetrical shapes. They are the visual counter part to my geometrical bass lines. A sort of meditation. Fixed but somehow alluding to movement.
Thanks mate oh just one more thing (Columbo) Anything else about moving back to London?
Yeah back in a tower block! Here’s the view....
