"The worst part about seing this film was having to get on the tube at Archway at 8.30 am. I love walking through Soho in the morning though, which made up for it. The Picture House Central, (West End) is a lovely cinema, and once I was comfy inside and the curtain went up. Well it just got better!"
Sometimes Always Never
The narrative follows a father’s search for his long lost son Michael, who left the house never to be seen again half way through a game of scrabble! Bill Nighy is perfect in the lead role as Alan, a well dressed Scrabble obsessed tailor, at odds with his youngest son Peter. The pair set off to identify a body that matches the description of Michael, along the way encountering some idiosyncratic characters. During this time the two begin learning more about each other, allowing Peter to share some home truths with his sometimes aloof father.
It wasn’t long after the film started that I began feeling affection for it. This didn't stop. The humour was right on my level and soon I related to all of the characters.
I always try to recast a film as a small test but on this occasion I came up blank. The whole cast were perfectly at home in this film.
‘Sometimes ...’ is a film that refuses to be rushed. It sets its own pace with confidence - and who else but Bill Nighy could do the same!
Nighy is just perfect in this role, his costume is perfectly apt in every scene (not surprising when we learn his trade) and every scene was perfect.
The interior locations in particular really added to the mise en scène and the gorgeous driving scenes make you smile at the quirkiness, what a great idea! (You will have to watch the film)
Some clever editing during the car scene reinforces just how far apart father (Alan) and young son (Peter) have become, but is Alan trying to reach out?
I’ll have to watch this film again to fully appreciate the subtle touches that fill out the narrative into a clever plot. This is a film which should be taken on more than just face value.
The music score was wonderful! I loved the graveyard scene in particular and the ending song (Edwyn Collins) is just a face glow joy! I had to sit right through to the end of the credits.
Loved this film!
