'Fear Pageant'
Did we mention we love Fred Abong? best pp & Fran loves you x
Thursday 20th July 23 (today) brings the 'Fear Pageant' (via Seattle label Disc Drive), the seventh album from alternative folk-rocker FRED ABONG, formerly bassist for THROWING MUSES in The Real Ramona-era and founding member of BELLY with TANYA DONNELLY. Alternatively, you may know him as a Vedic astrologer, which he has been practicing for over 20 years. More recently though, Abong is prolific in releasing music as a solo artist and also regularly tours as part of the KRISTIN HERSH ELECTRIC TRIO.
Though now based in New Orleans, Abong spent his youth in Rhode Island, cutting his teeth in 1980’s hardcore and punk bands as a drummer, bassist and guitarist before joining forces with the aforementioned artists. 'Fear Pageant' is a contemplative collection filled with melodic crooners like 'My Way' and lighter meditations like 'Father'.
Of Filipino-American heritage, Abong makes rich and textured music, its raw production aesthetic both imaginative and oblique. Stereo Embers Magazine says this is "a triumphant blend of raw acoustic numbers and dreamy low-fi soul that are buoyed by a deep and stirring vocal delivery that fills each track with a ferocious and fractured finesse. Poetic, romantic, philosophical and probing"
