RED SNAPPER
NEW ALBUM - ‘EVERYBODY IS SOMEBODY’
RELEASED - LO RECORDINGS - JUNE 2022
Music pioneers, Red Snapper have announced that they will release their eagerly awaited new album on independent imprint Lo Recordings in June 2022.
‘Everybody is Somebody’, a title inspired by the writings of the economic and ethical historian RH Tawney, was self recorded and produced during lockdown and then mixed by award winning engineer Shuta Shinoda (Ghost Poet, Hot Chip, Anna Meredith) . Available digitally and released on limited edition vinyl, the album will feature fifteen new tracks that will include the acclaimed recent singles ‘Truth 1’, ‘B Planet’ and ‘The Warp and the Weft’ together with the forthcoming ‘Tarzan’ release.
The follow up to their acclaimed ‘Hyena’ album from 2014 (the soundtrack to Senegalese film Touki Bouki - restored by Martin Scorsese), the new long player sees the band emerge with a celebratory and impassioned outburst of collective energy that has been brewing for the past eight years. Red Snapper’s ever-evolving sound and innovative mix of dub, jazz and electronic beats is still very much to the fore, but there is a real freshness, vigour and a distinct move towards uncharted musical ground for this collection of tunes which sees them collaborate with a new breed of singers and players such as Natty Wylah (vocals), Abe Friend (keys), James Wade-Sired (trombone), Mike Clarke (vocals), Layla Assam (vocals), Lana Friend (vocals), George Crowley (sax), Amine Mesnaoui (piano) and Vladimir Kitliar (theramin).
Formed in 1994, Red Snapper are best known for their unique sound and passionate live performances where they embrace dark funk, hip-hop, dub, psychedelic surf, afro-jazz and beautiful, fragile soundscapes. A compilation of their early EPs ‘Reeled and Skinned’ was released on Warp Records who consequently went on to put out the ground breaking debut album ‘Prince Blimey’ in 1996.
Over the last two decades the band have released a string of widely acclaimed albums, toured globally and supported the likes of Massive Attack, Bjork, The Prodigy, De La Soul and The Fugees. They also acquired a reputation for their expansive remixing – reworking tunes by Trouble Funk, Garbage, Lamb and Edwyn Collins amongst others.
Prior to the release, Red Snapper will embark on their first full UK Tour in two decades in May 2022. The twelve dates will launch at The Jam Jar in Bristol on the 4th of May and finish up in London at The Moth Club in Hackney on Sunday the 22nd of May.
Following the hugely well received sell out shows in Ramsgate and London late last year, the original line up of Rich Thair (drums) and Ali Friend (double bass) together with long term collaborator Tom Challenger (sax) will again be joined on stage by vocalist Natty Wylah and new addition Tara Cunningham (guitars / vocals). Red Snapper have confirmed they will be playing a set comprising new material from the forthcoming album, as well as classic, barnstorming, Snapper cuts from their vast and celebrated back catalogue. The shows promise to be impassioned, soulful and body-jerking affairs…as is their reputation.
