WALLACE TERRY
Was an award winning Journalist who covered the Vietnam War.
His insight into the war and the treatment of black soldiers by their own side prompted him to correlate an oral account of the events from black soldiers.
The conclusion was that black soldiers were fighting 2 wars. The enemy and racism.
This treatment of soldiers coincided with the black power movement, and politicised many.
Especially with the assassination of Martin Luther King. Why were they fighting for another people's freedom when they hadn't got their own?
So many swore to join the Black Power movement when they returned.
Examples of terrible racism in Vietnam are recorded by Wallace Terry.
One of a Black soldier given the job to compensate the Vietnamese people for loss of animals or livelihood.
This was so important, just a water buffalo could be their means of surviving.
Doing his job the soldier was called 'gook lover' and ostracised.
You can check the figure but almost 40% of casualties were black. They were put at the front and nicknamed "The Soul Squad."
Watch part of the recordings, Wallace Terry died in 2003.
Bless him x
